Impressions?

What are your first impressions of Carleton's new president?

Seems like a bit less of an academic than Oden (actually, not a whole lot of academic papers et cetera on his CV). I'm willing to bet he speaks at least 8 fewer languages than Oden.

But it looks like he's got a lot of administrative experience and was extremely effective. And it seems the committee was impressed with his personal demeanor throughout the entire process.

Did any of you current Carls see him speak or anything during the selection process? I'm curious to hear what you think.

  1. Yeah, I talked to him briefly. He seems like a great guy. He doesn't have a doctorate - which is interesting. But by all means, he's got experience in Higher Ed. He seems really down to earth and he does seem like a good fit for Carleton based on this first impression (his talk and the meet and greet). I talked to a few people who were on the search committee and have met him along the process and they all really like him. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I honestly was surprised when I heard the news - there were reportedly a significant number of women in the final four candidates.

  2. My comps advisor is on the search committee, and he was very impressed by Poskanzer. There was 1 woman in the final four, but she was the least experienced. They also apparently had a CEO-like figure. I think Poskanzer is a good choice, we'll see how he turns out.

  3. J.D. (Juris Doctor) is a doctorate in law, but it is a professional doctorate so you more often see them in a courtroom than a classroom

  4. I know dat Ted. I meant traditional scholarly doctorate when I said that.

Just thinking about it, a CEO like figure would have been bizarre...

  5. Actually Ted in terms of Law, A Masters Degree in Law is Higher than a J.D. So it goes JD Masters Then PHD.

Also I would compare the pick to Tebow...Seems like a winner, but we will just have to wait and find out how he handles himself

  6. I saw his speech on Friday when he was announced. He seems like a really nice guy and like Oden he has a pretty funny sounding voice. I do think the whole announcement and speech was structured and aimed at prospies. It will be interesting to see how he fits in.

  7. A Masters degree in Law is an academic degree that very few lawyers ever actually pursue. A Doctor of Laws (PhD) is only an honorary degree. For all intents and purposes, a JD is the terminal degree in Law.

  8. Jeez guys, I was just saying a J.D. is still a doctorate, and any degree from Harvard Law probably means the guy's no slouch.

I watched his video interview now and it seems like being the president of Carleton is more or less his dream job, and he's got ambitions for making Carleton as great as possible. Seems like he'll be good for the college's reputation at the very least.
